Two Colorado Springs hospitals waive ‘out of pocket cost’ for Club Q victims
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - It's been more than six months since the deadly mass shooting at the Colorado Springs LGBTQ+ nightclub Club Q. While months have gone by, many survivors are still on the long road to recovery. Now, two Colorado Springs hospitals are helping those survivors with medical fees.
On Monday, June 5, officials with Centura and UCHealth announced they're waving all medical costs not covered by insurance for anyone who was a victim of that night.
On the night of November 19, 2022, ambulance after ambulance showed up at Centura and UCHealth hospitals. The severity of some injuries required lengthy hospital stays for some.
"There are long-term issues that folks are going to have to deal with and it's a blessing that hospitals recognize the amount of trauma that it causes the local area and go ahead and relieve a lot of that stress," said Rich Fierro, a Club Q survivor and one of the two men credited with taking down the accused killer.
Fierro was one who the many people injured that night and is one who will be getting his hospital bill waived.
"There's bills for people that were there until January or almost January so, the six months seems kind of long, but it's really only been three months since most of us have kind of settled down after the holidays," said Fierro.
"There was a lot of stress, you know there are kids that they were looking at bills larger than anything they've made in years so, those things are huge a huge relief and also a positive thing to show that the community cares," added Fierro. "All these kids in there were just trying to have a good time, no one was trying to hurt anybody until this went sideways and all of us became a family that night."
Colorado Health Partnership is also working in providing free mental health help for all those victims who were part of the Club Q shooting.
