Canon City Police investigate report of suspicious package, woman arrested

CAŃON CITY, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Cańon City Police Department asked people to avoid an area near the police department Monday morning.

Around noon CCPD said there was "police activity" near Justice Center Rd. and Independence Rd. but provided no further information. By 12:50 p.m., they reported that the situation had been resolved.

Later Monday afternoon, more information was provided, and the CCPD said officers had responded to a report of a suspicious package.

When officers arrived at the scene, they contacted a woman who was carrying an "unknown black bag." CCPD said the officers' investigation led to the arrest of the woman for false reporting of an explosive device, criminal trespassing, and criminal tampering.

The woman has been identified as 48-year-old Janel Armstrong of Canon City.
