Woman makes headbands to protect ears from face mask bands

Headbands for masks

PEYTON, Colo. -- The community has stepped up to make homemade masks and help keep medical professionals safe in a time when supplies are running low, and now one woman living in Peyton is taking it one step further by creating headbands that protect employee's ears from their masks.

On the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic, wearing face masks is critical. That's why a small group of volunteers have created and donated thousands of masks.

"We've made 8,911 as of today and I'm sure my phone is blowing up right now for some more. We have a group from Grace Community Church here in Falcon, a group from Black Forest arts and craft guild and a stitching group here in Falcon," said Bobbi Nielson.

But when it comes to headbands, Meredith Meyer and Nielsen work as a two-women operation. Meyer makes them and Nielsen delivers them.

"Meredith's headbands have been a blessing to the nurses working 12 hours," Nielsen said.

With a needle and some thread, Meyer has found a new way of occupying her free time.

"I've personally made maybe 100. It does't seem like that much, but I have a 2-year-old, a 4-year-old and a 5-month-old so it's all the time I have," Meyer said.

It's a simple hack with the potential of protecting the ears of those working to protect us.

"There are buttons over where both ears would be and you take the edges of the face mask place it where it goes and loop it around the sides of the buttons," she said.

She keeps extras in a box on her front steps, inviting anyone who needs one to take one home.

"It's a small thing we can do as a thank you," Meyer said.

Each stitch showing a little piece of appreciation.
