Operation Homefront distributes 300 food bags to Colorado Springs military families
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Operation Homefront is an organization that prides itself on helping military families year-round. On Friday, Operation Homefront gave away 300 bags filled with picnic snacks and silverware for families to enjoy ahead of the 4th of July weekend. They also received a $50 grocery gift card to spend on holiday treats.
"This event helps us with celebrating the holiday where it's not a strain on our budgets with four boys growing it gets a very tight budget," said Elizabeth Huddleston, military wife.
Operation Homefront participates in this event every year. The idea behind it is to help as many military families as possible.
Beth Desloges is an Area Manager for Operation Homefront. She said people believe military families are financially well off, however, according to Operation Homefront, one in every five military families suffers from food insecurities.
"A lot of people that are lowed ranked like E1, E4 it's hard for people to have more than two children because it's obviously more expensive when you go out and do things," said Michael Burt, active military member.
Here in Colorado Springs with the cost of living continuing to increase, Operation Homefront feels it's necessary to help.
"So many military families are away from their support system, so around the holidays it's nice to be able and give them an experience that they can have with their core family," said Desloges.
Operation Homefront helps provide financial resources to hundreds of families every year. Later this summer, they'll host a back-to-school giveaway for military families in Colorado Springs.
