Rampart HS student overcomes health obstacle to graduate with honors
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A Rampart High School senior preparing to walk the stage at graduation is sharing her incredible journey to the milestone event.
During her sophomore year, Kari Lucas says she was suffering from headaches and even lost feeling in the left side of her body. Doctors later discovered a blood clot in her brain that caused a stroke. Because the clot was so sensitive, Kari was put on several medications but she also had to take a break from volleyball and other extracurricular activities.
In May 2020, the clot finally went away and she was allowed to return to volleyball. Her teammates modified plays so they could stand behind her in case a ball was launched in her direction. In the classroom she needed more breaks from her studies and reading assignments.
Despite the setbacks, Kari ended her high school career with a 4.0 GPA and found the time to join a few after-school clubs.
