Colorado Springs assisted living facility takes residents rock climbing for the first time

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Just because you reach a certain age doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try new things. That was the case for some seniors from the Palisades at Broadmoor Park assisted living facility, who tried indoor rock climbing for the first time ever on Tuesday at City Rock in Colorado Springs.

While many of these seniors stay active in their own way, this brought a new challenge. All of them are newcomers to rock climbing. But that didn't stop them.

“I didn’t know if I wanted to try it now, thinking about it, its not on my bucket list but it is now”, said Palisades resident Julie Templin.

The assisted living facility likes to keep its residents active. Officials say rock climbing is not only great exercise for the body, but the brain too.

“It's going to help them connectively because when you’re on the wall you’re trying to solve a problem basically: where do I put my hands, where do I put my feet, so it's keeping their brains moving” said Emily Cozzetto, Director of Resident Enrichment.

The Palisades at Broadmoor Park hope that activities such as these help keep their seniors active.

“I think a lot of people think of senior living, and think you know there’s nothing to do just doing the same things everyday and so it's important to break down those barriers of what aging is and offer activities that are like I said out of the box,” Cozzetto added.
