City of Colorado Springs activates new school traffic zones across at four campuses
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO13) -- City officials spoke Wednesday about installing safety signals at four new school zones.
KRDO 13's The Road Warrior reported on a similar installation last summer at Pine Creek High School.

The new locations are:
- Rampart High School – along Union and Lexington
- Mitchell High School – along Galley and Murray
- Jenkins Middle School* – along Austin Bluffs Parkway
- Carmel Community School – along South Chelton

City officials gathered at Rampart to explain how these new school zones will create safer conditions for students, drivers, and bicyclists; share research on how slower speeds reduce the frequency and severity of crashes; and reveal that the new signals were activated Tuesday.

"Of course, the school districts, schools, administrators and parents pretty much agree universally that it's a good move to do," said Todd Frisbie, the city's head traffic engineer. "And so, I feel like we're providing a lot of benefit to our community by putting in an effort to installing these school zones."
Rampart's principal, Meghan Sanders, agreed.

"These are two busy streets that Rampart is cornered in," she said. "With a lot of traffic in the morning involving student drivers, staff drivers and parent drivers, any extra protection is a positive for our school. I saw a driver who was (speeding), slowed down at the flashing lights. That was nice."

This all comes after a Doherty High School student was hit and killed nearly two years ago. She was hit by a car as she was crossing a crosswalk. Doherty High School received its first school zone a month later.

*While the Jenkins Middle School building isn’t currently being used due to structure issues, the campus grounds are being used as both a transportation hub and for outside activities.
