COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Springs Police Department's Major Crash Team is investigating a crash that resulted in the death of a man days later.

On April 4, officers were dispatched to the intersection of S. Academy Blvd. and E. Bijou St. regarding a three-vehicle crash.

According to CSPD, a Mazda was traveling northbound on S. Academy Blvd. when the driver tried making a left turn onto westbound Bijou St. That's when the Mazda was hit by a red VW sedan traveling southbound on S. Academy Blvd.

After the initial crash, police say the Mazda hit another VW sedan that was sitting at a red light waiting to go east on Bijou St. from S. Academy Blvd.

At the scene, officers found an individual suffering from serious, life-threatening injuries. After being treated by first responders at the scene, they were taken to a local hospital.

On April 15, the Major Crash Team was notified that the driver of the Mazda who turned left to travel west on Bijou from S. Academy Blvd. died from injuries they sustained in the crash.

On April 18, the El Paso County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as 78-year-old Michael Levan.

According to CSPD, this was the 10th fatal traffic crash in Colorado Springs in 2022. This time last year, the CSPD Major Crash Team investigated 13 fatal traffic crashes.

Detectives say speed is considered a possible factor in the crash and this incident remains an active and ongoing investigation.
