A look inside the house explosion caused by a hash oil lab in Pueblo West

hash oil lab in Pueblo West

PUEBLO WEST, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office says an illegal butane hash oil lab is the cause of a home explosion in Pueblo West that happened Tuesday afternoon.

Neighbors reported hearing two booms around 2 p.m. before a fire started at the home on Tierra Buena Drive. One person was transported to the hospital and is facing several charges for the operation.

Captain of Investigations for the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office says, "Anytime you're mixing butane and you're doing stuff that's going to cause, or could cause an explosion, it's very dangerous for the residents that live inside the house but also for the neighbors in the community as well."

On the front lawn of the house, deputies had collected several containers of marijuana, propane tanks and other paraphernalia used to create hash oil from the drug.

"It's a pretty elaborate system. Any part of this system is volatile, because you're using butane, it's a flash point so at anytime if there's one explosion it could cause a chain reaction which we saw here," said Capt. Mora.

The value of the evidence has not been determined yet. The Sheriff's Office had not yet weighed the marijuana or oil collected from the home.

Inside the home's garage, a large hole had been blasted through the ceiling, where officials believe the first explosion happened. Directly behind the garage are two rooms covered in soot, and destroyed from the second explosion and resulting fire.

Fire damage extended into the home's kitchen where a living room and countertop area had severe smoke damage.

Capt. Mora says the regional code enforcement department has condemned the house and has considered it "unlivable."
