Red Flag Warning goes into effect Monday for most of Southern Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Monday, most of Southern Colorado will be under a Red Flag Warning. The warning will go into effect due to the low humidity values, strong gusty winds, and dry fuels. The areas include the San Luis Valley, Eastern Fremont County, the I-25 Corridor from the Colorado Springs area to the New Mexico Border, and the Southeast Colorado plains.

Already Monday, one grass fire broke out just south of Garden of the Gods Road, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department. It was quickly extinguished before spreading to surrounding buildings.

So how can you prepare for a red flag warning? Well, you can start by creating a defensible space around your home. That means cleaning away any brush or low-hanging tree limbs. The National Weather Service says it's also a good idea to put together a basic emergency supply kit that includes anything you may need if you have to leave like medications, pet supplies, and any important family documents.
 
You also want to plan escape routes and make sure everyone in your home knows the plan of action. Before an emergency happens, sit down with your family or close friends and decide how you will get in contact with each other, where you will go, and what you will do in an emergency.

The fire warning will go into place at noon and is expected to stay in effect until 8pm tonight.
