Hearing reveals Suzanne Morphew tried to leave her husband two days before she disappeared

SALIDA, Colo. (KRDO) -- New text messages revealed on the second day of Barry Morphew's preliminary hearing show that his wife, Suzanne, tried to leave him two days before she was reported missing. Her body still has not been found.

A neighbor reported Suzanne missing from her Salida home on Mother's Day, May 10th, 2020. Her husband, Barry, said he thought she went on one of her daily bike rides and never came home. He told investigators he was worried that a mountain lion had attacked her, or someone had picked her up.

The text Suzanne sent to Barry on the morning of May 8th, 2020 reads, “I'm done I could care what you’ve been up to for years. We just need to figure this out civilly.”

Barry responded to Suzanne over text saying, "I promise you are wrong about all the crazy thoughts about me. Only a fool would stray from an angel like you. When I'm dead, which won’t be long, you guys will be taken care of.”

We learned on the first day of preliminary hearings that Suzanne suspected Barry of having an affair, so she purchased a "spy pen" to secretly record him. Law enforcement said there still has not been any evidence to indicate that he was having an affair, although he did search the internet for "searching for a cute girl near Salida."

The second day of preliminary hearings also revealed that the vast majority of Barry and Suzanne's fights were about money. When Suzanne confided in her close friend about wanting to leave Barry, her friend advised her to tuck a little money away.

While Suzanne was concerned that Barry was having an affair, law enforcement learned six months after her disappearance that Suzanne was having an affair herself. She rekindled a romance with an old classmate two years before she went missing. On Tuesday, FBI Agent Ken Harris testified that the man she was having an affair with was in Michigan (where he lived) at the time of Suzanne's disappearance. The last time he messaged her was May 11th, 2020, the day after she was reported missing.
