ABSOLUTELY COLORADO: Kids Crossing prepares foster children for Camp Faubion trip

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Volunteers gathered on April 1 to prepare foster children from the Pikes Peak region for an upcoming trip to Camp Faubion. The nonprofit Kids Crossing organized the event to ensure the children had the gear necessary for their outdoor adventure.

For more than 30 years, Kids Crossing has supported local foster children through placement, counseling and other resource coordination. Camp Faubion, which is held in partnership with YMCA's Camp Shady Brook, is currently in its fourth year of operation.

Officials say volunteers spent the day stuffing backpacks with essential gear, including sunscreen, flashlights, and rain ponchos, to ensure the children are fully equipped for outdoor activities.

Aimee Davis, director of development at Kids Crossing, explained that the camp is specifically designed to meet the needs of children in the foster care system.

Davis emphasized that the camp provides a different environment than standard summer programs by adding specific support structures.

"Just because a lot of our kids have experienced quite a bit of trauma, their needs are a little bit higher and it's really hard for them to be successful at typical overnight camps," Davis said. "So with this camp we've added kind of a therapeutic layer and some familiar faces to help them be successful over the weekend."
