Southern Colorado businesses collect items for Texas flood victims

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO)- Texas continues to receive an outpouring of support after the deadly floods hit the Lone Star State. Now, several businesses in El Paso County are collecting items to help families affected by this natural disaster.

Cass Cameron is the creative mind behind Buckets to Backpacks Flood Relief Drive. She told KRDO13 that she was in Texas visiting family when the flood happened. Now, she's doing everything she can to help those in need. 

"I was there when it happened, and we were just, like, sitting on her couch, and she said, I wish that we could do something," said Cameron.

Jennifer Farnes is the owner of Revolution Jewelry Works and is one of the businesses that are collecting items. Farnes said it's important for them to help out those in need. 

"That's why we participate with all of these different nonprofits. We want to be able to help the people that we know are going to do the most work with us," said Farnes.

This fundraiser effort started last Saturday, and many have already started to drop off donations.

"So we have inventoried over 5000 individual items and bulk items. We have a lot that hasn't been inventoried yet because it's come in in the last two days," said Cameron. "Get a truck and a trailer, maybe need two trailers now. And we're just going to be driving down August 1st. It's about a ten-hour drive to San Angelo, which is our first stop."

This Saturday, The Chuckwagon 719 will host another fundraising event, from noon to 5 p.m.
