Suspect points gun at Doherty High School students off campus following altercation
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Doherty High School was on secure status while the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) searched for a possibly armed suspect in the area, according to CSPD.
CSPD says that several students were off campus for lunch when they encountered an unidentified male engaged in an altercation with another person. The suspect produced and brandished a handgun and pointed it at several students who were near the altercation.
According to CSPD, the suspect was still reportedly in the area when students made reports to security and the School Resource Officer at Doherty High School. As a precaution the campus was placed on "Secure" and additional security personnel from D11 and CSPD responded to ensure the safety of the returning student population from lunch.
CSPD patrol officers conducted an extensive search of the area with the assistance of K-9 units and other specialized personnel. Despite search efforts, CSPD says that no suspect was located.
Doherty Campus released the secure status late in the afternoon.
According to CSPD, officials do not believe that this was a targeted incident, and there is no current threat to the nearby area.
District 11 says that a secure status is when all doors are locked aside from the main door to control who can enter. They are searching everyone who enters the building but, classes continue as normal.
