14-year-old dies following a Pueblo crash Sunday, three other juveniles injured
PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- A high school student lost her life following a serious crash that happened over the weekend. Now, her family is mourning her death and saying that this tragedy was "preventable."
Tuesday, the Pueblo Police Department announced one of the juvenile passengers in Sunday's crash had died. Pueblo District 60 confirmed the death with KRDO and identified the victim as 14-years-old Osiana Iacabone, a freshman at East High School.
Another teen injured in the crash also attended East High School.
According to police, officers responded to the 0-100 block of Duke St. on reports of a crash at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 30.
Through an investigation, police determined that four juveniles were in a Mitsubishi traveling west on Duke St. when the driver lost control and rolled the vehicle.
Two juveniles were ejected from the car, the other two were also injured.
All four passengers were taken to a local hospital, one was flown to another hospital for further treatment. At this time, police haven't been able to provide the ages of the other juveniles injured.
Iacabone's family told KRDO that they're devastated by her unexpected death. Her grandmother said she was funny, smart, and lit up the world of everyone around her.
"I lost my granddaughter at 4:37 a.m. this morning over a silly car accident that could have been prevented," said Victoria Martinez. "My family is just in so much turmoil right now for the loss of a 14-year-old. She was beautiful. She was intelligent. She was a straight-A student."
District officials said they know this loss hit East high students hard and brought in grief counselors to help those struggling with Iacabone's death.
A vigil for Iacabone is happening at 7 p.m. on Duke St.
