A stabbing in La Junta that left one dead is under investigation

LA JUNTA, Colo. (KRDO) -- The La Junta Police Department (LJPD), with assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), is investigating a stabbing that occurred on August 12.

The LJPD received a 911 call of a man lying in the street at the intersection of 9th Street and Santa Fe Avenue. The victim was transported to the Arkansas Regional Valley Medical Center in La Junta where he later died.

The Otero County Coroner named the victim as Charles Shane Cheatham, a 47-year-old from La Junta.

According to investigators, the El Paso County Coroner conducted the autopsy and ruled the victim’s death as a homicide.

The CBI says that investigators believe the victim was stabbed in his residence located in the 600 block of Colorado Avenue in La Junta, left the residence, and was contacted by a citizen on the street.

There have been no arrests made in this case. Based on the initial investigation, there is no threat to the community at this time, according to the CBI.
