Click It or Ticket: seatbelt enforcement is on

COLORADO, (KRDO) -- Colorado's summer seatbelt enforcement period begins today and goes through August 5.

There is a possibility of a $65 ticket for not wearing a seatbelt.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 118 unbuckled people have died on Colorado roads so far this year. Colorado is behind the national average when it comes to buckling up.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) says that the highest number of tickets are issued by Castle Rock and Colorado Springs Police.

Tickets for improperly buckled children carry stiffer penalties. Car crashes are a leading cause of death for kids younger than 14. The NHTSA estimates nearly half of car seats are used incorrectly.
