PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Pueblo Police Department arrested a man involved in a shooting.

On Saturday, September 4, an officer heard a single gunshot near the 800 block of E. Abriendo Avenue. After hearing the shot, the officer saw a vehicle in the 600 block of E. Evans Avenue. The officer began following the vehicle, which managed to elude the officer.

A little while later, the officer heard the Pueblo Police Department Communications Center say a person had just been shot in the 600 block of E. Evans Ave.

According to the police department, the officer began searching for the vehicle seen earlier and found the driver at the intersection of Lake Ave. and Division Ave. After a brief pursuit, the officer successfully performed the Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) as the driver turned onto Columbia Dr. from Surfwood Ln.

Police took the suspect, identified as 47-year-old Joseph Martinez, into custody. Officers found a "slam gun" inside the vehicle. According to PPD, a "slam gun" is a device capable of firing shotgun ammunition.

Martinez was booked into the Pueblo County Detention Center on several charges, including Attempted Second Degree Murder, Possession of a Dangerous Weapon, Violation of Restraining Order, and Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender.

Police say the victim had been shot in the chest and arm with "birdshot" while sitting on the front porch of a house. He was taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
