Pikes Peak Area Crime Stoppers offers $5k reward for tips on Manitou Springs cemetery vandalism

MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Pikes Peak Area Crime Stoppers are now offering a $5,000 reward for information on the people responsible for destroying dozens of gravestones and memorials at a Manitou Springs cemetery.

On May 26, workers at the Crystal Valley Cemetery discovered more than 50 monuments and gravesites had been "topped or broken." They also found large amounts of trash and a small burn area within the cemetery.

For some of the families, the damage was irreparable.

Interim Police Chief Bill Otto said, "It is disheartening to see such disregard and damage towards the memories of our community's loved ones."

After cleaning up the vandalism, the City of Manitou Springs' Parks and Recreation and Public Work crews estimated the current cost of damages is roughly $25,000.

Crime Stoppers said the reward money was made possible "through the generosity of local citizens." The reward is offered for information that results in a conviction of the person/persons responsible for the vandalism.
