Over 50 gravesites vandalized at Manitou Springs cemetery
MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Investigators are looking into a large amount of vandalism that took place at the Crystal Valley Cemetery after crews discovered more than 50 monuments and gravesites had been affected Wednesday morning.
According to a news release from the city of Manitou Springs, the monuments and gravesites had been "toppled or broken," and crews also found large amounts of trash along with a small burn area in the cemetery.
Manitou's Parks and Recreation Department is reaching out to the families and plot-owners of gravesites that were affected. Some of them experienced irreparable damage.
An investigation is underway, but no suspects have been identified yet. Police say they're increasing patrols near the cemetery in the wake of the vandalism.
"It is disheartening to see such disregard and damage towards the memories of our community's loved ones," Interim Police Chief Bill Otto said.
