FLORENCE, Colo. (KRDO) -- A 17-year-old suspect is in custody after allegedly making threats about "shooting up" Florence Junior/Senior High School.

On Tuesday at 11 a.m., the Florence School Resource Officer received multiple reports from students that a juvenile male had allegedly threatened to "shoot up" Florence High School.

The SRO and Fremont RE-2 School District officials put the school on heightened alert status in response to the threats.

The Fremont County Sheriff's Office and Cañon City police worked on finding the suspect. After a few hours, deputies located and attempted to contact the suspect in Cañon City.

The suspect led deputies on a brief foot pursuit but was ultimately detained. Deputies found a stolen firearm in his possession at the time of the arrest.

The suspect was placed in custody by the Cañon City police for possession of the stolen firearm.

At 4:00 p.m. Florence Police received an additional third-party threat of a shooting at the school. Following that threat, district officials spoke with Florence Police and decided to move Florence High School to remote learning for Wednesday and Thursday.

The investigation is ongoing.
