PREVIOUS STORY:
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado Springs police say one person is in custody for second-degree murder after a man was fatally stabbed Wednesday near downtown.
The stabbing happened at about 12:40 p.m. Wednesday near 400 E. Bijou Street. Police officers found a man with a stab wound and took him to the hospital, but he later died.
Police issued an update Thursday saying that 45-year-old John Winters was contacted at the scene of the stabbing and taken into custody. CSPD says he's the suspect in the fatal stabbing.
According to an arrest affidavit, Winters allegedly stabbed his roommate, 67-year-old Peter Vincent Walker, after an argument that started because of loud noise on New Year's Eve.
The affidavit says that Winters and Walker had an argument in the kitchen on Jan. 1 that stemmed from the disturbance the night before, and a third roommate tried to get them to stop fighting. At one point, Winters had grabbed a multi-tool and had it in his pocket while the three exchanged words.
Winters held out a finger and pointed at Walker during the argument, and Winters told police that Walker grabbed the finger and twisted it. That's when Winters pulled out his multi-tool and made several slashing motions before stabbing the blade into Walker's chest.
The third roommate then called 911 while Walker left the kitchen to wait for medical personnel. When Walker was taken to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
The case is still under investigation.
