Colorado Springs FD debuts 3 new state-of-the-art fire engines

They are often the first ones to respond to the scene, but the equipment being used by the Colorado Springs Fire Department is becoming out of date.

Chief Ted Collas with CSFD said, “Engine eight replaced an engine that had 360,000 miles on it.”

The Colorado Springs Fire Department has 28 frontline vehicles which respond to your everyday call, but seven of those 28 are older than the 17-year replacement goal.

“We do have an older fleet, but we also have a dedicated maintenance shop that keeps all of that equipment ready for citizens needs at all times,” Collas said.

But now, CSFD has three brand new, state-of-the-art engines. And what makes these engines unique is that they are specifically designed for the city of Colorado Springs.

“It’s meant to be able to maneuver through between tight and narrow streets and to go places where larger and bulkier apparatus can’t travel. Another thing is it is built for our climate up here,” Collas said.

Each one of these trucks costs a half a million dollars to make, and Mayor John Suthers says this is only the beginning.

“I think the Police Department will spend about a million dollars in fleet replacement and about a million, million and a half for the whole rest of the city,” Suthers said.

The three new engines are currently out in circulation and Collas said that four more are in the process of being ordered.
