Official: Ex-Guatemalan president from prison in bribe case
A former Guatemalan president who was sentenced to nearly six years in prison for accepting bribes has been released from a U.S. prison in Colorado.
The Guatemalan Embassy in Washington said ex-President Alfonso Portillo was released from a suburban Denver prison Tuesday.
Deputy Chief of Mission Libna Bonilla says Portillo was taking commercial flights from Denver to Houston and then to Guatemala, where he faces no further charges.
Portillo was sentenced last year to nearly six years in prison for accepting $2.5 million in bribes. Bonilla says he was credited with time served in Guatemala.
