Plants given to wildfire victims with scorched yards
Thousands of donations for wildfire victims will soon find a new home in their yards.
A Pueblo nursery donated a mix of native grasses and perennial plants to victims of the Waldo Canyon and Black Forest fires Saturday.
Volunteers at Woodmen Valley Chapel helped hand them out.
Jim Rottenborn was among those picking up plants. He lost his home in the Waldo Canyon blaze last summer and said the new plants will help immensely.
“Since the fire, I’ve been drawing ideas of what the landscape would look like on dozens of sheets of paper and napkins,” Rottenborn said. “This is a big step forward to realizing my landscaping plans.”
Southwest Farms donated 6,000 plants. The owners said they were unable to continue providing water for them.
They plan to give away another 6,000 plants next weekend.
