Coloradans write children’s book about COVID-19

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Explaining the coronavirus quarantine to small children can be tough. Kids don't know what's going on, and they just want to play.

But there's now a new children's book available about two young twins whose birthday falls during the pandemic -- it's a very funny story called "Lily & Timmy's Super, Awesome, Incredible, Covid-19 B-day!"

The two authors, Mike Farrell and Jacob Horn, are both Coloradans. Farrell is a graduate of Liberty High School, and Horn lives in Colorado now.

Both of them are film guys. Farrell wrote a pilot for a TV show, and Horn most recently worked on the film Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. But they were looking for a new project and it led them to this hilarious children's story.

"We were just thinking that it would be really challenging to be a little kid right now during quarantine," Farrell says. "We were kind of telling some jokes about that, and then, all of a sudden, we thought of this idea around a children's book about a mom who had two twins that were supposed to go to Disneyland for their sixth birthday party."

"Mike and I just started writing about ourselves as children, remembering how we were as kids," says Horn. "It started to come very easily. We wrote the book in the day."

The book is already performing well. It started out as a dark comedy but the authors kept some of those elements while finding a way to write a story the whole family can enjoy.

"We realized we struck an immediate cord because moms were telling us, 'You do not realize how true the story is.' We had moms tell us the exact story," says Farrell.

Horn says it's rewarding to write something that can help bring families together.

"It doesn't matter what country you're from or what religion you are or what race you are. We wanted it so that everybody could understand, everybody could feel, everybody could relate."
