Boulder King Soopers shooting suspect again ruled incompetent to proceed
BOULDER, Colo. (KRDO) -- The man accused of opening fire and killing ten people at the Boulder King Soopers in March of 2021 remains incompetent to proceed in the case against him.
According to our news partners in Denver, 9News, Boulder County District Judge Ingrid Bakke made the ruling Thursday. The next review hearing for Ahmad Alissa is set for October 21. He has been in custody since March 22, 2021, when the shooting took place.
The case has been on hold since December 3, when Bakke first ruled the suspect was not competent to stand trial and sent him to the state mental health hospital in Pueblo. Bakke made her ruling after two doctors concluded that the suspect could understand the charges against him but had limited ability to meaningfully converse with others.
The Colorado Mental Health Institute is required to provide progress reports to the court every month until he is deemed competent.
9News reports that the state hospital said there is a "substantial probability that the suspect will likely be restored to competency within the reasonable future."
The suspect is charged with 115 counts, which includes 47 sentence enhancers. That would result in harsher penalties if he's convicted.
