Colorado Springs police officer pleads guilty to child abuse, receives no jail time
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Wednesday, an officer with the Colorado Springs Police Department pled guilty to a child abuse charge. According to court documents, this is a misdemeanor.
During his court appearance Wednesday, Reed was sentenced to two years of unsupervised probation. He also has to complete 12 anger management classes, a cognitive skills course, and 50 hours of useful public service.
During his sentencing, Chief Judge William Bain said all of this was "in addition to leaving a stain on the rest of the police department."
It's unclear if Reed will keep his job with the Colorado Springs Police Department. Previously, the department had told KRDO that Reed was still receiving a paycheck while on administrative leave.
Reed was accused of threatening to kill a 15-year-old boy in January. According to court documents, the 15-year-old said he was outside his house when Reed pulled up in his truck, shined his headlights on the child and his friend, and then got out.
The teen reported that Reed dragged him to a fence and then "pushed him by his upper collar bone against the fence."
Reed was arrested in March and was charged with:
- Second-degree kidnapping, class four felony
- Child abuse - knowingly/recklessly any injury other than SBI, class one misdemeanor
- Menacing - threat/physical action/fear of SBI, class three misdemeanor
- Harassment - strike, shove, kick class three misdemeanor
According to court documents, all other charges, except for the child abuse charge, were dismissed.
During court, the judge acknowledged that Reed was romantically involved with 31-year-old Kristen Wessel.
KRDO has reached out to CSPD to what his status is with the department.
