After her mom’s passing, Colorado Springs woman started writing books, now she owns a bookstore
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — "Young Bookworms" is a new bookstore on the north side of Colorado Springs that sells exclusively self-published books for kids.
The idea was created by Joni McCoy after she herself started writing and self-publishing books. Joni was inspired by her mother, an avid reader herself.
"My mom was the biggest reader ever and she really instilled that in all of us," McCoy said.
In her final stages of life, McCoy's mother enjoyed having picture books read to her by Joni. Joni's mother was battling Alzheimer's.
After she passed, McCoy was inspired to start writing books, eventually selling them around town.
After much success, McCoy decided to open "Young Bookworms" and fill the shelves with authors of all ages, some as young as six.
All the books face outwards on the shelves, so the kids can see the colorful covers and so every author has the same chance of attracting attention. It's not just the books that catch the eyes of the tiny patrons. The store sells personalized bookmarks, pens, and other goodies.
Starting Tuesday, the bookstore will begin offering workshops for young kids to learn to write and publish their own books. If they write one, it can be sold right alongside the other authors at "Young Bookworms", the kids can even earn royalties.
"Young Bookworms" is located at 3604 Hartsel Drive, Suite B in Colorado Springs.
