Denver man sentenced to ten years for road rage assault

18th Judicial District

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) - 42-year-old Alberto Mota has been sentenced to ten years in prison for swerving his pickup truck into a motorcyclist on August 16, 2020.

Colorado State Patrol was dispatched to the scene of the crash on I-25 southbound near mile marker 187 around 2 p.m.

According to the Douglas County District Attorney's Office, witnesses reported seeing a group of motorcyclists passing Mota's Ford pickup truck. The motorcyclist that Mota struck said he was traveling with a group of friends, adding that Mota began following the group once they passed.

The independent witness provided the dashcam footage above, which shows the truck rapidly changing lanes without signaling, before ramming the motorcyclist into a concrete barrier.

The injured rider suffered a broken leg, ribs, and collarbone.

Mota was later identified as the driver of the truck. Mota did not have a valid license at the time of the crash and denied ever getting into the road rage incident with the motorcyclist.

Mota pleaded guilty to:

  • Vehicular Assault
  • Felony Menacing, two counts
  • Child Abuse
  • Reckless Endangerment, four counts

“Mr. Mota, who was driving with his daughter and without a valid license, lost his temper when four motorcyclists passed him on the highway. He purposefully caught up to them and swerved his F-250 directly into one of the bikers in retaliation. He chose to endanger the lives of numerous people on the road that day because of his anger. Thankfully, with the dash camera capturing his actions on video, his attempt to blame the biker for the crash was not successful.”
