Neighbors recount scene where Pueblo 2-year-old died from Fentanyl in September

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) - The Pueblo County Coroner has released the cause of death for a 2-year-old boy who died on Sept. 23, 2024.

The coroner identified the boy as Ezikeal Leroy Aguilar.

The coroner says that the cause and manner of death was ruled accidental fentanyl toxicity.

The Pueblo Police Department (PPD) says the initial call for service came from an address on Lambert Avenue on the west side of Pueblo.

KRDO13 Investigates spoke with some neighbors who say the coroner's confirmation of fentanyl as the cause of death makes the entire tragedy even harder to swallow.

Neighbors say first responders lined this street on the night of Sept. 23. That's the night Ezekial Aguilar died, and at the time police ruled it as a "suspicious death."

Neighbor Luis Garcia, says he knew something was really wrong when the Pueblo County Coroner arrived on the scene. But, he could never imagine how painful it would be to hear the official cause of death.

"It tore me up. it makes you. It makes you think about life, you know? That, that 2-year-old didn't even get a chance," Garcia said.

It's not clear exactly how Ezikeal came across the drugs. PPD says they haven't filed any charges at this time since they were waiting for the autopsy results.

As of right now, PPD says the investigation is ongoing.
