Colorado Springs residents identified as the three bodies found in Gunnison County campsite
GUNNISON COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) - The three people found dead near a campground in Gunnison County have been identified as Colorado Springs residents.
According to the Gunnison County Sheriff's Office, a hiker near Gold Creek Campground within the Gunnison National Forest discovered a remote campsite with a "heavily decomposed deceased individual within the camp" on July 9. Authorities later discovered two more bodies within the campsite.
Officials said two of the bodies were inside a small, zipped-up tent and the other was outside in the camp. There were personal belongings, tarps, and a lean-to built from logs over a firepit. Gunnison County Sheriff Adam Murdie said this was in a remote wooded area where hikers typically wouldn't pass by.
The sheriff's office believes the three were dead for a "substantial period of time," likely there since winter, possibly last fall, before they were found. the GCSO said the remains were "fairly mummified."
Tuesday, the Gunnison County Coroner identified the deceased as 42-year-old Rebecca Vance, 41-year-old Christine Vance, and a 14-year-old boy. The teen's name hasn't been released due to him being a minor.
Their official causes of death are pending further analysis.
