Barry Morphew out of jail, supporters post $3 million bond
ALAMOSA, Colo. (KRDO) - The Alamosa County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) confirmed to KRDO13 that Barry Morphew left the jail around 11:45. One of his daughters picked him up, and ACSO says they left together. Deputies confirmed that he left wearing street clothes, which were brought to him.
Morphew recently appeared in court, as he is accused of killing his wife.
Previously, the court denied his attorney's request to reduce Barry Morphew’s cash-only bond.
As of Friday morning, Morphew was being fitted with a GPS monitor, according to David Beller, Morphew's attorney. He tells KRDO13 the GPS monitor is a condition of the bond.
KRDO13 also spoke with a friend of Suzanne Morphew, Barry's wife, about his release. Tisha Leewaye told KRDO13 over the phone that she was not happy to hear of Morphew's release from jail. She said that she and other friends of Suzanne think he should be in jail while the legal process plays out. Instead, Leewaye noted that Morphew is being released from jail right before the two-year anniversary of Suzanne's remains being found.
On September 22, 2023, Suzanne's remains were found in a shallow grave about an hour south of their Salida home.
KRDO13 asked Beller if he or Morphew would comment on his release. They declined.
Morphew is expected back in Alamosa County Court on November 2.
On May 10, 2020, Morphew's wife, Suzanne, supposedly went on a bike ride in Chaffee County and never returned. A neighbor reported her missing, and her bike and helmet were eventually found along the side of the road the day she disappeared.
When her body was found years later in 2023, the coroner determined Morphew died by “homicide by unspecified means in the setting of butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine (BAM) intoxication," – three drugs commonly used as animal sedatives.
According to Morphew's indictment, law enforcement located a locked gun safe in the Morphew residence, which held a tranquilizer rifle. Investigators also discovered packages of darts in the safe and found a needle cap for one of those darts in the Morphews' dryer.
