Face masks no longer required at Colorado Springs Airport

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Masks are no longer required at the Colorado Springs Airport, but they are encouraging travelers to have masks with them as the situation continues to evolve. The Colorado Springs Airport says they made the decision per the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) decision to no longer enforce the mask mandate.

The change to the mask mandate comes on the heels of a federal judge in Florida voiding the national mask mandate over public transportation. The ruling stated the mandate exceeded the authority of U.S. health officials amid the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention extended the mask mandate for public transportation, which was set to expire on May 3. This will not be in effect while the ruling is being reviewed.

"The Colorado Springs Airport is working with local TSA agents to ensure we are in line with the changing guidelines," said Dana Schield, a Colorado Springs Airport spokeswoman.

The Colorado Springs Airport says they're continuing to keep the health and safety of passengers a priority. They say if you don't want to wear a mask bring one because rules will change on airlines and at other airports, especially internationally.

"When traveling internationally it is important to check with that airline to check to see if they are or not enforcing the mask mandate. If you are connecting from any other flights from Colorado Springs to a different airline always double-check with them," said Aidan Ryan, a Colorado Springs Airport spokeswoman.

As of Tuesday afternoon, various airline carriers -- United, Delta, Alaska, Horizon, American, Southwest, Alaska, Frontier, and Jetblue -- are no longer requiring employees and passengers to mask up on domestic flights.

Others, however, have yet to take an official stance.

International flights are subject to the departure and arrival country rules.

At Denver International Airport, masks are no longer required.

Before flying, travelers are urged to call their individual carriers to verify mask rules.
