Police chase suspect after crashing into patrol car in Fountain

FOUNTAIN, Colo. (KRDO) -- A suspect in a stolen car ended up crashing into a Fountain police officer early Friday, and a manhunt was underway for nearly an hour after the driver took off on foot.

According to the Fountain Police Department, officers got information about two vehicles stolen from Colorado Springs, and an FPD officer spotted one in the area of Hwy 85 and Carson Boulevard at about 7:30 a.m.

FPD says the officer tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver drove into the parking lot of a nearby business and tried to evade the officer before ramming into the police cruiser head-on.

After the crash, the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Gabino Detorre-Lopez, ran away into a nearby mobile home park with a gun.

Police say businesses near Southmoor Drive were locked down while officers worked to get the suspect in custody.

By about 9:15 a.m., the suspect was in custody, police said. He was found on the property of a nearby lawn and garden store, and the gun was recovered inside the mobile home park.

Detorre-Lopez faces charges of second-degree assault on a peace officer, felony criminal mischief, felony eluding, and possession of a weapon by a previous offender. A mugshot hasn't been made available yet.
