Gov. Polis gives update on COVID-19 in Colorado, plan to restore in-person learning

Gov. Jared Polis is giving an update on Colorado's ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic as the first shipments of vaccines are being administered across the state. Polis is also outlining the state's plan to return students to in-person learning.

Watch below:

"We know that what has been occurring this last semester simply hasn't worked for too many kids, for too many teachers, for too many parents, and we can and we must do better," Polis says.

The Governor's goal is to return all students and teachers safely to the classroom for the upcoming semester, which led to Polis creating a Back-to-School Working group which created some changes to help keep students and staff safe.

Polis listed off some of those new measures on Tuesday. "It includes prioritizing testing for schools, expanding contact tracing capacity for schools, continued mask-wearing, regular symptoms screening, effective cohorting, continuing social distancing, and effective ventilation," Polis says.

The biggest change Polis mentioned is that schools will soon be able to conduct on campus rapid testing for any students or staff who are feeling sick.

"If a teacher has a symptom, instant test," Polis says. "We have plenty of supplies to do that." Adding County health departments will be the ones supplying those tests but if schools aren't getting what they need then the state will step in.

However, Polis says all these extra measures need to be used at the same time to prevent spread of the virus in schools. "Frankly, this creates one of the safest work environments in the state," Polis says.
