Police: Man drowns trying to retrieve tube in Lake Granby

DENVER (AP) — A body was recovered from a northern Colorado lake after the man went into the water and never resurfaced, authorities said.

The Grand County sheriff’s office said the man was attempting to retrieve a water tube that had drifted out into Lake Granby on Monday around 2:30 p.m. when he began shouting for help, KUSA-TV reported.

A member of Grand County Search and Rescue, who was at the Stillwater Campground recreating, attempted to use a personal watercraft to rescue him but was unsuccessful. The man then disappeared and never resurfaced.

His body was recovered from the lake at 7:15 p.m. with assistance from multiple agencies and the use of a submersible drone, authorities said.

The Grand County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death.

“It is another tragic incident in Grand County,” Sheriff Brett Schroetlin said. “Our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends as they work through this difficult time.”

Lake Granby is the third-largest body of water in the state and is located about 5 miles northeast of the town of Granby.
