Possible pipe bomb found near a trash facility in unincorporated El Paso County
EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- GFL Environmental is back to working it's normal operation hours, after being closed for nearly five hours due to an on-going investigation after a possible explosive device was found outside of the gated in El Paso County.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, a possible explosive device was found at a business in the 500 block Air Ln., south of Hwy. 24 and Hwy. 94.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office held a press conference to release details on the incident earlier Tuesday afternoon:
The Colorado Springs corporate office of GFL Colorado Springs Transfer Station, a trash transfer disposal station, received a call earlier Tuesday morning from an unknown individual that there was a bomb on the site along Air Ln.
When employees searched the site, the EPCSO said they did find what appears to be a pipe bomb. The sheriff's office was called just after 9:45 a.m.
The sheriff's office said a cordon was established for several hundred yards. People were asked to stay away.
Members of the Regional Explosive Unit responded to the scene. As of 1:45 p.m. the unit determine the location was safe and could be open to the public once again.
At 2:04 p.m., the sheriff's office said the Regional Bomb Squad had rendered the device safe. All emergency responders left the scene.
According to the EPCSO, this is still an ongoing investigation.
EPCSO is urging people who may have seen or know something about this case to call the El Paso County Crime Stoppers or the Sheriff's Office immediately.
