Affidavit: Colorado Springs man fatally shot wife, baby son because ‘something just came over’ him
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Newly released court documents reveal that the man who is facing charges for the shooting deaths of a woman and baby told a 911 dispatcher that he wasn't feeling well, and "something just came over" him when he allegedly shot and killed the two.
Colorado Springs Police arrested 29-year-old David Corey Weingarten after he told detectives that he shot and killed his wife, 26-year-old Lizet Salinas-Mijangos, and his 8-month-old child named George Weingarten.
Arrest documents detail Weingarten's confession to police. Around 7 p.m. on Feb. 1, Weingarten called 911 to report that he had shot and killed two people.
"I just shot [Lizet] and [George]. I've been feeling not good lately and something just came over me. I don't know what happened. I've been hearing things, and I don't know what's going on," Weingarten told a 911 dispatcher.
Officers arrived minutes later and took Weingarten into custody. He told an officer, "I shot them", outside the home before officers took him to the Colorado Springs Police Operations Center (POC). Initially, Weingarten gave police a different name and birthdate than his own, declining to speak with investigators when questioned at the POC.
Hours later, Weingarten told an officer he changed his mind and wanted to speak with them. He then told them his correct name and birthdate, saying "he wasn't feeling well" earlier and that's why he gave them the wrong information at first.
At this point, he told detectives that he was having bad thoughts earlier in the day, so he went to grab his forty-five caliber gun from his vehicle and then went back inside his house where he shot and killed his wife, and his 8-month-old son. He said his son's crying made him anxious, which contributed to his decision to take his life.
He also told investigators he shot them both because it was quick and he believed it would limit their suffering.
Weingarten is facing several counts, including first-degree murder, no-injury child abuse, and reckless endangerment.
Weingarten will be in court next on February 15, 2022 on those charges.
Salinas-Mijango's twin sister, Lizbeth, said the couple's other child, Amber Marie, was also in the house at the time of the shooting. She's just a few months shy of two years old.
Lizbeth posted a GoFundMe to raise money to help support their surviving child, who she will now be raising.
"All proceedings will go to get her all the necessities that she need such as clothing diapers formula and her crib. I am a single mother of two and getting all the support we need for her with family and friends," reads the GoFundMe.
