Soldier stationed at Fort Carson faces potential court martial for child sexual abuse, child pornography

KRDO

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- A soldier in the Army stationed at Fort Carson has been charged with multiple counts of child sex abuse after a preliminary hearing last week, according to Army court martial records.

Private First Class (PFC) Samuel Purvis was charged with four counts of sexual abuse of a child, possession of child pornography and producing child pornography in violation of parts of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, according to the U.S. Army Office of Special Trial Council (OSTC).

Officials say there are two alleged victims in the case.

OSTC says Army prosecutors presented a summary of evidence to support the charges against PFC Purvis in his preliminary hearing on July 2. Some of the evidence was digital records from PFC Purvis' cell phone.

According to OSTC, a hearing officer will determine if there is probable cause and issue a formal report. From there, OSTC will determine whether or not the charges will be referred to a court martial.

If the charges are referred, the case is assigned to a military judge for any potential arraignments, motion hearings and trial.
