Absolutely Colorado: Weidner Apartment Homes shuts down operations for a day to help local non-profit
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - More than 80 employees from Weidner Apartment Homes were part of a shutdown of company operations Friday to participate in a day of volunteer service at the Catholic Charities Hunt Family Campus in Colorado Springs.
By donating skilled labor for facility upkeep, the property management company completed necessary repairs while saving operational costs for the non-profit organization.
Volunteers arrived at the property as early as 6 a.m. Friday to begin work on the grounds.
“6 a.m., they've been here since 6 a.m.! I don't think we can express enough gratitude. This is amazing,” said Rochelle Schlortt, the Chief Communications Officer for the Catholic Charities of Central Colorado.
The donated labor covered several property maintenance and landscaping projects across the campus.
Miles Diaz, regional director at Weidner Apartment Homes, outlined the tasks completed by the workers.
“All of our team members are out here for a day of service,” Diaz said. “So we've been shoveling bark, mulch, doing landscape work in the flowerbeds, laying down lots of gravel and rock. We did a grading and irrigation drainage project and lots of painting.”
The extensive repairs help relieve Catholic Charities of maintenance expenses on the large property.
“When you have a large campus, there's always things that happen,” Schlortt said. “And when you have an organization that comes in, and they fix so many of your little problems, it's more money that goes directly into the program.”
Company staff spent the day applying their workplace skills to outdoor physical labor. Jenny Fach, a Weidner Apartment Homes worker, commented on the team effort.
“To see everybody be able to use their skills and their passion to actually give back and make such a change,” Fach said. “It's been cool to see everybody have fun and take a day off to give back.”
