Absolutely Colorado: Local non-profit build record-breaking packaged food tower for Hunger Action Day

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Care and Share, a non-profit food distributor for southern Colorado, held in celebration of Hunger Action Day where they attempted to build the highest packaged food tower.

Previously, the record was 11 feet and 1 inch. The one built today exceeded it by 4 inches, at 11 feet and 5 inches. The tower consists of around 8,000 canned goods put together by the 45 volunteers at the Care and Share distribution center in Colorado Springs on Tuesday.

Care and Share says the tower was a way for the company to visually illustrate the issue of food insecurity. They say it shows how just a small fraction of the over 20 million pounds of food that have been donated in the last year can make a significant difference in the community.

"I think that the people at Care and Share and the almost 5,000 volunteers that come into this facility every single year put the needs of others before their own," CEO of Care and Share, Nate Springer, said.

Cooperation from others was a focal point in the decision-making on how the non-profit would celebrate National Hunger Action Day, according to officials.

"I wanted something that we needed a lot of hands to do. We didn't really want a one-person project. We wanted something you can do in a day that could use a lot of folks from the community and decided, what a better than a really tall can structure? " project manager Madison Reed said.

After starting at 10 a.m. this morning, they finally finished the tower at 3 p.m.

Care and Share has an official website where you can find out about more information about volunteering and how to donate to help the community.
