Adult, 2 kids fall through the ice at Quail Lake in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - The Colorado Springs Fire Department rescued an adult and two children who fell through the ice on Quail Lake.

Fire Department officials say when they arrived on the scene all three were already out of the frigid water. At 2:30 p.m. they were being evaluated for injuries.

On social media, the fire department posted a reminder about lake ice in Colorado Springs:

This is a good time to remind everyone that it is never safe to play on the ice in Colorado Springs. We do not experience consistently cold enough temperatures to ensure that the ice is thick and strong enough to be on, and falling through into the frigid water can quickly become deadly.

Fernando Manka told KRDO13 that he was fishing when he saw the two kids fall in the water.

Manka said it all happened so fast, minutes after warning a family about the thin lake ice he saw two children plunge into the icy water. Manka and two other bystanders rushed to help out the kids.

"I walked out there with two other gentlemen. I saw a crack in, backed off a little bit. The other gentleman kept walking. He ended up falling in," said Manka.

A woman who was near by gave Manka a rope so he could help save the kids.

"I had the youngest kid out there grab it first because he was bobbing up and down, up and down. and so i have him grab it. And then his older brother got up, grabbed me into the rope at the same time. So to pull them both back," said Manka.

Then the man who fell in the lake during the rescue.

"He was still out there and he looked like he was going into shock. And so i grabbed the rope again, threw it up there. he finally grabbed onto it, pull him back in," said Manka.

Manka said this could've been a different outcome if they all didn't act quickly to safe the kids and the adult.
