Cañon City Police says calls for missing persons has been consistent, new program helps bring loved ones home

CAÑON CITY, Colo. (KRDO)-- The Cañon City Police Department is partnering with Project Lifesaver to provide a new service to Cañon City residents. 

According to the Police Department, Project Lifesaver helps family members diagnosed with a medical condition, such as dementia or severe autism, that contributes to individuals who may wander off from time to time. 

In the case a family member does go missing, specially designed wristbands will send an alert to a trained Department personnel who can use a receiver to quickly locate and safely return those individuals. 

According to the Cañon City Police Department, calls for a missing person has been consistent over the last several years, averaging just a little over 20 calls a year. Of those calls, approximately half involve a person who is suffering from a medical condition that would qualify for this program.

"We're really focused and concerned about people if they walk away from home," said John Sabatino, Cañon City Police Department.

The Cañon City Police Department stated the service will be free to Cañon City residents but supply of wristbands are limited. 

Currently, the Department stated they are pursuing grant funding to provide additional wristbands to all who qualify. However, those who wish to support the service can still make a donation to the Department.
