EPCSO/KRDO

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- An organization meant to assist local law enforcement families is stepping up to help the family of an El Paso County Sheriff's deputy who lost his life in the line of duty.

On August 7, the sheriff's office says two deputies and a Fountain police officer responded to a reported shooting in Security-Widefield. When they arrived, EPCSO said they were met with gunfire.

Deputy Andrew Peery was one of two victims who died in that shooting. According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, the suspect, John Paz, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In addition to the EPCSO accepting monetary donations for Dep. Peery's family, the Pikes Peak Region Law Enforcement Family Support is accepting items specifically for the two children he left behind.

According to the organization, community members are invited to drop off gift cards to the Sheriff's Office or send digital gift cards to Janethuffor@elpasoco.com

KRDO confirmed with the EPCSO that the information provided was correct.

At this time, KRDO has not received information on any sort of fundraisers for the second victim, Alex Paz. She was a former marine and identified by her mother as the suspect's ex-wife.

According to Alex's mother, Rosetta Kelley, her daughter lit up the room when she walked in. She loved animals and was in the process of becoming a veterinary technician.

If and when a fundraiser happens for Alex, KRDO will share out that information.
