Pueblo Police are hopeful a new grant will speed up crash investigations

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Pueblo Police Department (PPD) has applied for a grant they hope will speed up crash investigations.

The grant would help them buy equipment to expedite deadly crash investigations.

The PPD started requiring that all new cars have a data recorder in 2021, according to the US Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

That technology in cars records certain data like speeding, airbag deployment, and seatbelt use. Police refer to this device as a black box.

Currently, Pueblo Police are unable to analyze that data on their own. The money from the grant would allow PPD to process that data in-house and speed up the investigation process, says PPD officials.

Officials with the pueblo police department say if they receive the grant, they expect to get the money as soon as October.
