Fountain Police: Death of 4-year-old girl ‘fentanyl-related,’ mother in custody
EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Fountain Police Department said the death of a 4-year-old child is believed to be fentanyl-related. Additionally, officers have identified the suspect in the death of the child.
The Fountain Police Department Chief of Police told KRDO they are investigating the child's death as possibly fentanyl-related. The El Paso County Coroner's Office could not confirm if the cause of death was fentanyl related.
Wednesday, officers with the Fountain Police Department were dispatched to the Love's Truck Stop.
At the scene, officers found a woman and a child. Despite performing CPR, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.
Thursday, the El Paso County Coroner identified the child as Acelynn Staton-Contreras.
According to police, detectives identified 24-year-old Emma Staton as the suspect in her daughter's death. She was arrested and charged with:
- Child Abuse Resulting in Death (Felony)
- Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance (Felony)
- Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Detectives arrested Staton Wednesday.
Following her arrest, Staton's bond was set at $50,000
At this time, the coroner said there is no preliminary cause or manner of death. However, that information will be released as it's completed. This could take between six and eight weeks.
According to police, charges are pending regarding Acelynn's death.
