Car thefts across Colorado on the rise

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO)-- Car thefts are becoming a big concern across Colorado. The numbers continue to rise and are on pace to beat record highs set in 2021.

According to Colorado State Patrol (CSP), Colorado has the most car thefts per capita in the United States.

"We don’t know particularly why the numbers are increasing, whether it’s an economic issue or if people feel more emboldened," said Trooper Joshua Lewis with Colorado State Patrol.

In May, more than 3,600 cars were stolen across Colorado, that includes communities from Ft. Collins running south through Trinidad.

Colorado State Patrol says the most recent numbers show an 18% increase from January to May.

"It’s of particular concern because we understand when a vehicle is stolen it’s most likely going to be used in the commission in yet another crime after that," said Lewis.

Troopers say they are searching for a reason behind the spike, but a lack of patterns or common location is making answers hard to come by.

"We are seeing it everywhere whether it’s a commercial area, in front of people’s homes, or parked on the street," said Lewis.

CSP says 91% of stolen cars are being recovered, but that doesn't mean you'll want it back.

"Sometimes you don’t know what the vehicle was used for, and you may not want to get back into it again," said Lewis.

CSP says parking in a well-lit location, removing valuables, and always locking your car are essential steps to protecting your property.
