Non-profit raises money to send family of 7-year-old Colorado Springs cancer survivor on vacation

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The local chapter of a non-profit organization is working to send a 7-year-old cancer survivor and his family on their dream vacation.

Campaign One At A Time is raising money to send the Thompson family in Colorado Springs, made up of his mother, father, and four siblings, to Disney World. As of Monday afternoon, the non-profit has raised just over $600 out of the $5,000 goal.

According to the non-profit, Lucas has been battling leukemia since he was little. After two years of treatment, he was declared healthy and in remission. Unfortunately, that was short-lived. Six months later, cancer was found in his blood, spinal fluid, and brain.

In September 2021, the non-profit says Lucas received a bone marrow transplant. He's now on daily oral chemo medication that will hopefully prevent another relapse. Lucas is set to have another bone marrow aspirate in September.

While Lucas continues to deal with doctors, medicine, and treatments, the non-profit hopes this trip will allow the Thompson family to make amazing memories together.

Lucas's mom Michaela said after years of separation the family is hoping to make up for lost time and make new memories with the family.
