2 arrested in Fountain after counterfeit money, people’s personal info found in car

FOUNTAIN, Colo. (KRDO)-- During a traffic stop on Tuesday, the Fountain Police Department discovered drug paraphernalia, brass knuckles, and hundreds of counterfeit U.S. currency.

Officers initially made the stop in the 5500 block of Travel Plaza Drive in Fountain for an expired temporary registration tag. Upon their discovery, they conducted a search of the vehicle and found templates used to make counterfeit money, counterfeit currency, multiple people's personal information, and fraudulent checks.

The occupants of the vehicle were later identified as 36-year-old James Champagne and 30-year-old Kristine Chapman. They were both booked into the El Paso County Jail on the following charges:

  • Identity theft
  • Forgery
  • Criminal Possession of Forgery Device
  • Criminal Possession of Financial Device
  • Criminal Possession of an ID Document
  • Possession of Schedule II Controlled Substance
  • Possession of an Illegal Weapon
  • Various traffic offenses

Fountain Police say Champagne's criminal history also shows prior arrests in five other states, along with several felony convictions.

Chapman's criminal history shows two different cases of forgery as well as a felony conviction for attempted motor vehicle theft out of the state of Washington. She also has a felony warrant from Washington for her arrest.
